Hookahs and cabanas, when paired, are a treat for Montegonians. But add Lebanese-inspired belly dancers and Indian food and the result is simply awesome!
Last Saturday night, Mystic India, Friends for Education (FFE), and DJ Irie Latino transformed the courtyard of the Whitter Village in Ironshore, along the Rose Hall corridor, into a middle eastern oasis.
Private cabanas, smoking hookahs and Jamaican belly dancers were the highlight of this fund-raiser. Organisers, Mystic India's Kareena Mahbubani and Vijay Sadrangani, each showcasing their speciality - Mahbubani's richly prepared Indian food and Sadrangani's thirst for educating the country's children.
Proceeds from the event will go towards the
$1.2 million worth of scholarships that FFE hopes to disburse this year
in high schools across the parish of St James.
Started
in 2012, FFE has provided students with books and uniforms and paid
CXC, CSEC and CAPE fees for students at Cornwall College, Mount Alvernia
High, Harrison Memorial, Barracks Road, Flankers and Howard Cooke
primary schools.
"In the academic year 2012-2013, 16
primary and 16 high-school students were awarded academic bursaries,
while 16 CXC, CSEC and CAPE students' exam fees were paid," Sadrangani
revealed, adding that some students received lunch and transportation
throughout the year.
Among their other fund-raising
activities last year were HoliHungama, Moments with PankajUdhas, the
Diwali Ball and a cricket fun day.
Friends for
Education is convinced that, without education, even the most modest
dreams of improving one's station in life become just that - a
dream.
Making its first round in Montego Bay, the
Lebanese Night was well attended and has great growth
potential.
