10 Things You Didn't Know About Lachu Ramchandani

Businessman Lachu Ramchandani is known and celebrated as a
connoisseur of beauty and an entrepreneur passionate about Jamaica and
things Jamaican.

Considered loyal to a fault by his closest
friends, he has been described as a real stand-up guy who is always
willing to take one for the team.

A bon vivant, he is also
known for his fabulous soirées and fine entertaining and being one of
Montego Bay's leading citizens - but one with a national perspective!
Today, Outlook shares 10 things you did not know about the affable Lachu Ramchandani.

1. He was born In Ragoon, Burma (Myanmar).

2. He came to Jamaica in 1967 as a student and worked as a wrapper boy at Manhattan House to pay his school fee to go to Durham College on South Camp Road.

3. Lachu started working at the age of 14, and was promoted as a salesman, then floorwalker, and finally to manager.

4. In 1975, he married Bina, a Jamaican citizen, originally from India, and started selling several items on the road and made a small profit of three per cent. This was a lot of struggle, but he followed his dreams by branching out on a larger scale and started selling different types of merchandise such as baby clothes, jeans, thimbles, and even bun and cheese, to name a few.

5. His favourite Jamaican dish is rice and peas with curry chicken and a lot of Scotch bonnet pepper, yam and boiled bananas.

6. He has had a passion for beauty pageants since 1992 when he sponsored a contestant in Miss Jamaica World. In 1993, he became a major sponsor and sponsored two contestants who both made it to the top 10.

7.Lachu started his own pageant in 2004 to help groom and build the confidence and self-esteem of girls in Jamaica and as a part of community service by contributing his time and effort.

8. His aim is to help boost the island's tourism sector through the pageants and provide additional income for the country. He is also the director for Good Shepherd Foundation, which is one of the charities he has been involved in. He is also involved in the Association for the Deaf, Charlotte Children's Home, and Friends for Education, just to name a few.

9. He is a justice of the peace (JP) and takes his duties as a JP very serious. He sees it as a way of giving back to the community and helping to make a better country.

10. Lachu travels a lot to recruit directors, contestants, international media, and sell Jamaica as the best tourist destination. His theme is 'Uniting the world through beauty and tourism' and his aim is to bring at least 5,000 additional tourists to Jamaica by showcasing beauties from the globe, targeting countries Jamaica does not traditionally receive tourists from.
