WESTERN BUREAU:

The aroma of garlic, curry, coconut, black beans and Scotch bonnet pepper caressed the nostrils of hundreds of persons who turned out for the Caribbean Shrimp Festival at the Whitter Village, Ironshore, Montego Bay, last Sunday.

Now in its second year, the event's organisers received blessings not just from the overwhelming support of Montegonians, but God who provided rays of sunshine for this year's event after last year's was almost washed out by heavy rains.

Somewhat unprepared for the large crowd that showed up, the VIP area had to be scrapped, but those who opted for the regular section got the crèmé de la crèmé of entertainment, particularly the children who were the real VIPs.

They (children) were treated to every game imaginable that can be found at a kids' summer camp. From bounceabout to a makeshift 'merry go round', farm carts and acrobats normally found at a circus, it was a day for them to savour.

One of the highlights of the day was the celebrity chef cook-off. This saw general manager of the Montego Bay Convention Centre, Dittie Guise, walking away with the coveted first-prize trophy. Others in the competition were singer A.J. Brown and designer Ann-Marie 'Kokobeenz' Chin and the Gleaner's own Janet Silvera placed second in the competition, taking home a trophy and a gift bag from Rum-Bar.
