BERLIN (AP):Germans flocked to swimming pools, lakes and beaches yesterday to escape soaring temperatures that hit 39°Celsius (102.2 Fahrenheit).

Meteorologists say Germany's highest-recorded temperature of 40.2°Celsius, measured in 1983, might even be reached today.

Thunderstorms over the weekend were expected to bring some respite before the thermometer rises again this week.
