Children perish in house fire

GEORGETOWN, Guyana (CMC):An early-morning fire yesterday claimed the lives of two children while their mother and brother have been admitted to hospital. According to fire officials, the blaze engulfed the Georgetown residence shortly before 4 a.m. The charred remains of the brother and sister, eight and 11 years old, were removed from the bottom flat of the wooden and concrete house. Their mother, Sheldeen Thomas,37, and brother 13-year old Hordean Marshall were admitted to hospital in stable condition.

Curtis Williams to head Media Assn of Trinidad

PORT-OF-SPAIN (CMC):Energy reporter Curtis Williams has been elected president of the Media Association of Trinidad and Tobago and has promised to pursue deeper relations with the Caribbean media umbrella body, the Association of Caribbean Media Workers. Williams was elected at one of the organisation's largest annual meetings hosted at two locations in the north and south of Trinidad via teleconferencing facilities.

Jamaican woman arrested for health fraud in New York

BUFFALO, New York (CMC):The United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency says special agents from the Department of Homeland Security Investigations have arrested a Jamaican woman for health-care fraud, identity theft and unauthorised use of social security numbers. Georgia Bowen, also known as Georgia Bennett, 38, who resides in Lackawanna near Buffalo in upstate New York, faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and a US$250,000 fine if convicted.
