WESTERN BUREAU:
Though former Governor General Sir Howard Cooke was absent (because of ill health), his name headed the list for special awards made to 90 long-serving members of the People's National Party (PNP). They were honoured last Saturday by Region 6 during the party's 75th anniversary awards and dinner at the Montego Bay Convention Centre.
The event highlighted the contribution of those who had provided faithful and outstanding service to the party over the years.
The impressive list boasted names such as former Prime Minister P.J. Patterson, former Tourism Minister Reverend Francis Tulloch, Ambassador Frank Pringle; Senator Noel Sloley; former Senator Janet Madden; prominent attorneys-at-law Clayton Morgan and Frederick Hamaty, former Speaker of the House, Violet Nielson, Arthur Nelson, James Thompson, and former Custos Owen Sinclair.
The honourees, all from St James, Hanover and Westmoreland, have provided faithful and outstanding service to the PNP and the nation in the areas of community development and welfare, education, sports development, health care, and policymaking.
Journey of achievement
"We salute you, the party workers, men and women who have assisted the party in carrying out its work in this region," noted Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller. She said that the journey of achievement had come with pain, defeat and success.
Held under the theme, 'Honouring Our Past - A Powerful Foundation for Today and Tomorrow', others who were recognised included creator of the 'Rising Sun' emblem, Eugene Ffolkes, Glover Allen, Indru Dadlani, and Anita Hylton.
