Anchorage students to witness teacher become US citizen

ANCHORAGE, (AP):
Students at an Anchorage middle school will be treated to a real-life civics lesson this week when they see one of their own teachers become a United States (US) citizen.
The US Citizenship and Immigration Service will conduct a naturalisation ceremony at Romig Middle School tomorrow.
Romig US history teacher Anaely Hernandez, who hails from Venezuela, will be among the eight people scheduled to be sworn in during a ceremony before the entire student body.

Besides Venezuela, the new citizens come from the Dominican Republic, Macedonia, Bhutan, Colombia, England and Senegal.
More than 18,000 people will become US citizens during 180 citizenship ceremonies across the country this week.
New citizens and their friends are being asked to share their experiences on Twitter using the hashtag (#) newUScitizen.
Citizenship ceremonies are annually held on September 17, which commemorates the signing of the US Constitution in 1787.
Formerly known as Citizenship Day, Congress in 2004 established September 17 as Constitution and Citizenship Day.
