WESTERN BUREAU:Hundreds of volleyball fans, and those who simply wanted to relax for the weekend in Negril, the capital of casual, turned out at the Long Bay Beach Park in the resort town for the inaugural Beach Volleyball Party weekend.

The three-day event climaxed on Monday at the Long Bay Beach Park and included the Linkz FM International Beach Volleyball Championship, and three themed parties which included a retro party dubbed 'Joy Ride' on Sunday night, 'Basic Necessity' on Saturday night, and the 'Drenched and Drippin' water party on Monday night.

Event promoter Roger Allen told Outlook that the event was staged in a bid to capitalise on Jamaica's still-untapped sports-tourism sector.

"Beach volleyball on a whole is not very Jamaican, so we had to find something else to draw the people and there was no better way to do that than with a party, because we are a party nation. So this is how we gave birth to the Beach Volleyball Party. The response from the patrons was great. They love the idea. It is something like the mound at Sabina Park. It is party and sports and a whole party carnival atmosphere," he added.
