Blocked culverts a threat to safety

Published:Saturday | December 21, 2013 | 12:00 AM

THE EDITOR, Sir:

In the Welcome Hall division, in Springfield, St James, there are at least 20 different culverts, all of which are non-functional. They all are blocked with all different types of debris. Some of the culverts aren't even visible.

There are culverts in Springfield that don't even have the little wall at the front that prevents vehicles, motorcyclists, pedal cyclists or even pedestrians from falling into the culverts. Also, the side drains that should be there to carry the water to the culverts are also blocked. This means that the water runs freely on to the road. Aside from the side drains and culverts, the water outlets are also blocked.

Water is the number-one cause of the damage to our roads.

I'm calling on the National Works Agency and/or the St James Parish Council to send someone in the area to do a formal investigation and appoint persons to have the side drains, water outlets and culverts cleared ASAP.
