WESTERN BUREAU:

The Little London High School staged its first annual Westmoreland Mango Jam fundraiser at the institution on Sunday.

The event was sponsored by Tropicana Tropics and featured, among other things, booths with juices, cakes, and confectionery made from mangoes.

Principal of Little London High, Garfield James, told Western Focus that the event was geared at raising funds to assist with developing educational programmes at the institution.

"The country, and specifically the Ministry of Education, is going through a period of severe financial challenges, and as a result of that, schools are presently underfunded," James explained.

"And with that reality, the administration, along with the fundraising committee, thought that we needed to do something that we could use to raise badly needed funds, to enhance some of the educational programmes as well as improve the infrastructure here, at Little London High to ensure that the holistic development of the students can be facilitated.

"As a result of that, we came up with the idea of creating a festival - a brand that can be recognised internationally and reach out to the diaspora," he added.

James said that this year, the funds collected would be used to purchase a school bus for the institution.

"We want to see how best we can be able to purchase the bus to meet the new academic year. That will help us to save money as well as improve on some of the educational programmes that we offer here," said James.

Ideal area

He added that the Little London area was ideal for the staging of the event due to the abundance of mangoes found in the geographical area, and that he was particularly grateful to Tropicana Tropics for having come on board as the title sponsor at such a short notice.

"We are really grateful to the celebration brand, especially Tropicana Tropics. We started the planning and execution in January, so we were happy with such a late initiative we were able to have Tropicana Tropics on board as a sponsor," he said.
