Attorney-at-law Sharon Milwood Moore credits her mother Joyce Milwood for her great work ethics as well as independence. She doesn't remember her mother ever taking any time off work, but she remembers her always being present in their lives.

"My mom has never stopped working, though she has reduced the number of days with the passage of time. Despite being very busy as a health professional, her family was never compromised. She seemed to extend the hours of each day to balance her love, affection, and active involvement in the lives of her children, from homework to meal preparation to everything in between," Milwood Moore tells Outlook.

The similarities between mother and daughter go beyond hard work as they have similar taste in food, a no-nonsense attitude, and quiet yet analytical personalities.

Family is at the top of Milwood Moore's priority list and, though she has a family of her own, she makes time to spend with her mother. Her mother does the same and spends time with all her children - even her other daughter who is currently studying in the United States.

"Mom will sometimes accompany me to take my daughter swimming on weekends. We will have dinner and talk around the clock. Mummy always knows what's happening with me and in the lives of all her beloved children," explains Milwood Moore.

For Milwood Moore, "Motherhood is the important role of nurturing, caring and loving one's child. It is the responsibility of moulding an individual who depends on you to fulfil their needs".

handing down values

As she learnt from her mother, Milwood Moore would like to pass on to her own children the practice of acknowledging God daily, striving for excellence, discipline and self-control, being respectful, honouring their obligations and responsibilities, good character and never procrastinating, and finally, being measured in their response, never being too hasty.
