Mr Harrison's lapse

Published:Monday | May 12, 2014 | 12:00 AM

We find it hard to discern the potential for compromise, or perception thereof, if Dirk Harrison, the contractor general, spoke at a function at which Scean Barnswell, the mayor of May Pen, against whom charges have been brought, spoke at the same function at which neither was the host. And especially in the circumstance in which Barnswell's role was merely to bring greetings, while Mr Harrison was the featured speaker.

It is, perhaps, an issue on which reasonable people can agree. But if Mr Harrison has those concerns, which he shared with his host, causing Mr Barnswell to be scratched from the programame, he needs to be far more circumspect when invited to participate at functions.

He appeared in Clarendon not to have known with whom he would share the podium and who would be the other speakers. That was his lapse that produced embarrassment all round.
