Daddy time
Most men dream of having a son to carry on the family name, play sports with and to share that manly bond. It is through these experiences that values and attitudes that constitute a responsible man are formed. Here, some fathers share with us their special activities they do with their sons and what they will be doing on Father's Day.
- Father: Damion Lyon, procurement and logistics manager, Columbus Communications, Son: Six-year-old Elijah
My son and I share a passion for football. At six years old, he is already a football star in the making. He plays football every day of the week and I go to all of his practices and games. After each game, we enjoy discussing what he did on the field, and he wants me to tell him what he did that I liked.
I may be living my dream of being a football player through him, since my time on the field has been curtailed because of an injury. Today, we will be spending the day having lunch at Tracks & Records watching a World Cup match. His favourite player is Cristiano Ronaldo, who plays for Portugal. During the game, we'll talk about some of the skills the players display on the field and I am sure I will see him trying many of them in his own practices and games.
- Father: Delroy Anderson, distribution channel manager, Columbus Communications, Son: Jhaiden Anderson, four years old
I feel I am truly blessed as two of my three children were actually born on Father's Day, one of them being my only son Jhaiden.
For this reason, Father's Day has always been quite special. The day usually starts with a visit to church with the family. This year, I plan to watch World Cup football games. In-between, Jhaiden and I will spend some time on our verandah to build a massive train track using his various Thomas and Friends train sets. We do this regularly, each time trying to outdo the design we built before.
My daughters Zuri and Maraye must get their time with Daddy, too. We'll probably play some games in the garden or whatever other ideas they dream up, after Zuri has done her wrecking duties on the train track that Jhaiden and I would have earlier dedicated our time to building.
While I might wish to have the day for myself watching sports on television, I know I am guaranteed to spend many hours of that day having fun with all three of my wonderful, brilliant, and distinctly different children.
- Father: Davalle Grant, SME sales executive, Lime, Son: Nine-month-old Dayton
At just nine months old, I enjoy feeding and playing with Dayton or watching football with him and totally spoiling him. As he gets older, I will be teaching him how to be a man in today's world, and that mostly involves respecting the law, taking responsibility as a man and showing respect for women. I learnt these things from my father and these basic principles have served me well throughout my teenage and adult life.
