WESTERN BUREAU:

Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) youth arm, Generation 2000 (G2K), officially launched its Hanover Chapter at the Eastern Hanover Constituency offices in Hopewell on Tuesday.

The eight-member executive of the nearly two-year-old chapter is chaired by Lauralda Spence, with Melanie Foster serving as vice-chairman.

In his address, G2K president, Floyd Green, praised the chapter for what he said was the outstanding work it had done in the parish since its formation.

"They have distinguished themselves well and we look forward to working with them in delivering a better solution for our young people in this parish. This is a wonderful day! It is a wonderful time to be here in Hopewell because I feel the spirit of Bustamante all over this parish, and it is critical that we recognise how critical this parish is in retaking Government," Green said.

He said the establishment of chapters of the G2K was important to the overall growth and participation of the country's youth, who often turn their backs on politics because of its perceived weaknesses.

"It is important for G2K to have chapters in every parish because we want to ensure that when young people want to find the politics, they can find it through Generation 2000. Too many of our young people are not interested in politics. Too many of our young people believe that politics is the worst profession on Earth. The truth is that some politicians have made it difficult for us, and some have promised a lot and have not delivered," Green added.

According to Green, more than 1,500 new members were added to the JLP's youth arm over the past year.

'Lay down a solid performance'

Opposition Leader and President of the JLP Andrew Holness, a founding member of G2K, urged the new chapter to lay down a solid performance to return the Eastern Hanover constituency to the Jamaica Labour Party, with caretaker Paula Kerr-Jarrett as member of parliament.

"There is urgency in our country. There are those sitting in high office who would want to tell you that what the PNP is doing is the right thing. There are those who sit in high offices who would want to tell you everything is all right, that what's going on is the only thing to do, but I urge you, don't buy that argument," Holness said.

"These people are only giving you the PNP doctrine as independent people. Don't listen to them because you know when you go to supermarket, it is you your pocket that feels it when you can't care for your family," he added.
