Ironic that media created Gomes

Dr Carolyn Gomes

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I watched the most amazing performance by Dr Carolyn Gomes during TVJ's major newscast last Thursday night. I had to really pinch myself to see if I was awake.

There was the goodly doctor lecturing media practitioners about how a press conference, called by Caribbean Vulnerable Communities Coalition, should proceed, and disdainfully asking at least one member of the media to show some "manners".

The reason I was so incredulous (and bemused) is that this was coming from an individual who, in my opinion, has always had a condescending attitude towards the media and public officials with whom she disagreed or who she thought should be singled out for criticism.

I have no issue with Dr Gomes expressing her opinion on any matter that she or the organisation(s) she represents wish to become part of public debate. However, I urge her to examine her own tone and condescending attitude before she begins to lecture others.

But I smile (wryly) at the irony of it all, because it is the media in this country that have created the persona into which this obviously qualified medical doctor has evolved.

The media deserve whatever she now dishes out for it was they who made it appear, so often, that Dr Gomes was the only authoritative voice on several issues regarding human rights.

Media practitioners, please heed the old adage: Be careful what you wish for - you just might get it.
