WESTERN BUREAU:
Eleven-year-old Sabre Spence scored a 95.7 average to gain the distinction of being the 2014 top performer in the Grade Six Achievement Test (GSAT), at the Lucea Primary School in Hanover.
Sabre scored 94 per cent in both language arts and social studies, 99 per cent in mathematics, 100 per cent in science and 11 out of 12 in communication tasks, to achieve the feat, as well as gain a place at the Montego Bay High School in St James.
Born in Lucea on September 30, 2002, Sabre attended the Maryland and Arthur Wint basic schools before being enrolled at the Lucea Primary School at the age of five.
Fully grasped concepts
In preparing for the GSAT, Sabre said she didn't spend a lot of time studying, as in most cases she fully grasped concepts while they were being taught in class.
"I didn't really study a lot. I went to evening classes at school, and studied sometimes when I went home," she said.
Her mother, Ebony Rodney, a carpenter, said her daughter's high marks were expected.
"I felt happy, but I wasn't surprised, because I knew she could do it. If she didn't have flu during the exams, she would have gotten 100. But she still did her best," she said.
"She doesn't need help really. Sometimes when she had a lot of work to do I sit up with her," she added.
Sabre, who has her sights set on becoming a medical doctor, is a prefect and a class monitor at the Lucea Primary School. She says her favourite subject is mathematics. Her hobbies include reading and playing games. Her favourite meal is ackee and saltfish and roasted breadfruit.
