The summer heat is in full effect and it is time for all the beach, pool and backyard parties. Ideally it is better for the skin to skip make-up altogether, but a little make-up can go a long way. When applying make-up for daytime, think fresh, light and dewy skin. The most important thing to focus on is skin care and wearing breathable, light make-up.

Expert tips from make-up artist Kerry Murray, Making Faces by Kerry

Skin

Prep the skin with a mild exfoliate then prime with a moisturiser or primer, preferably with some SPF protection.

Use concealer to cover spots then use a tinted moisturiser sparingly to even out the skin. Choose a BB Cream for an easy one step and avoid foundation all together, which will prevent the skin from looking too heavy and drab.

During your event, it is better to use blotting sheets to get rid of sweat than applying powder which will just keep building up and look cakey.

Eyes

The big trend with eye make-up is muted or nude lids, basically a beige shadow with a slightly darker colour for the crease.

Winged liner: This is still done in traditional black. However, you can take the winged liner a step further by using a coloured shadow. Start with a white pencil and draw a winged line, then, with an angled brush, apply a bright shadow on top.

Use a white liner on the bottom water line to open up eyes and to make them look brighter.

Cheeks

Avoid contouring during the day and pay attention to highlighting, applying a highlighter on the high cheekbones and where the sun would normally hit.

Use a bronzer instead of a blush to get a sun-kissed look.

Lips

Avoid matte lipsticks, but opt for creme-based lipsticks or go with a coloured lip gloss which will be easy to reapply. Orange lips are a big trend now - but if daunted by this bright hue, choose a coral gloss, which is universally flattering. Orchid and baby pink lips are also big lip trends now.
