Guyana displeased with US judgment

The Guyana government says it has no intention of prosecuting individuals on charges of Trafficking in persons just to satisfy the United States.

Minister of Human Services and Social Security Priya Manickchand says under the Act, Guyana prosecutes every person who would have committed trafficking offences.

However, she says they do not have a large number of convictions as the US desires.

During the recently held Fifth Summit of the Americas in Trinidad and Tobago, President Bharrat Jagdeo met with United States President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on the issue.

Jagdeo had said that despite not having even three documented cases of Trafficking in Persons, Guyana was placed on the Tier 2 rank.

It takes 100 documented cases for countries to gain US attention and be placed in this rank.

Ms. Manickchand says Guyana will continue to make persons aware of the harmful effects and consequences of trafficking and how it can be prevented.
