Egypt beat Italy
Egypt gave themselves a good chance of qualifying for the Confederations Cup semifinals by scoring an upset 1-0 victory over world champions Italy at Ellis Park in South Africa yesterday.
Mohamed Homos scored the only goal, rising to meet a well-delivered corner to direct a header in off the far post.
Egypt’s victory means that Group ‘B’ remains wide-open going into the final round of matches on Sunday.
Earlier, Brazil put on a vastly improved performance to beat the United States 3-0 and move closer to a spot in the semifinals.
The win at Loftus Versfeld gave Brazil six points in the group, six more than the USA. Egypt and Italy are locked on three points.
The group will now be settled on Sunday, when Italy face Brazil in Pretoria and Egypt take on the USA in Rustenburg.
