Jurist urges CCJ membership

Prominent Caribbean jurist Sir Shridath Ramphal is imploring CARICOM countries to fully join the Trinidad-based Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ).

Sir Shridath said the century-long success of the Caribbean legal profession is reason enough to accept the CCJ.

He said the regional court has won the respect and admiration of the common law world, and the Caribbean no longer needs the Privy Council as a final appellate court.

Sir Shridath was speaking yesterday at the inaugural conference of the Caribbean Association of Judicial Officers.

The CCJ was established in 2001 by regional governments to replace the London-based Privy Council.
