Jamaica’s foreign affairs minister Dr. Kenneth Baugh has condemned the circumstances, which led to the overthrow of the president in Honduras, Jose Manuel Zelaya.

In a statement last night, Dr. Baugh said the actions of the military are in breach of the principles of respect for the rule of law, human rights and constitutional order.

Additionally he says the Jamaican government is deeply concerned by the reports that a number of Honduran government officials and diplomatic representatives have been detained and may have been physically harmed.

Roberto Micheletti was yesterday sworn in as interim president hours after a military coup ousted President Zelaya.

Micheletti became president after lawmakers voted by a show of hands in the Congress to strip Zelaya of his powers.

In Congress a resolution was read stating that Zelaya was forced out as president because be provoked confrontations and division within the country.

Zelaya was taken to Costa Rica following the hostile takeover.

However, he has rejected his expulsion and has pledged to continue exercising his presidential duties.

Zelaya says he will be making a trip to Managua in Nicaragua, to attend a summit of Central American heads-of-state.
