Belize withdraws Ambassador from Honduras

The Belizean Government has withdrawn its Ambassador to Honduras to signal its condemnation of the forceful removal of Honduran President Manuel Zelaya.

President Zelaya was ousted from office by members of the military on Sunday and has been in exile in Costa Rica since then.

The Dean Barrow administration said it decided to take this action as part of recommendations from the Central American Integration System, of which Belize is a member.

Belizean officials say the next step is to suspend the disbursement of loans or other financial transactions to Honduras.

Meanwhile, the Organisation of American States has warned that it will suspend Honduras’ membership if President Zelaya is not returned to office.
