The main opposition party in St Kitts, The Peoples Action Movement, PAM, says its political leader and deputy have renounced their American citizenship.

According to the party, the issue of dual citizenship has been a campaign issue in the run-up to the next general elections, which must be held within the next nine months.

PAM leader Lindsay Grant and parliamentarian Shawn Richards, are said to have traveled to the nearest US Embassy in Barbados and took the oath of citizenship renunciation.

Under the St Kitts and Nevis constitution, naturalized citizens of foreign jurisdictions are barred from sitting in the federal parliament.
