The Trinidad and Tobago parliament has passed legislation to postpone Local Government elections for a fourth consecutive year.

The parliament, by a simply majority, passed the Local Government Bill and the Municipal Corporations Amendment Bill, which it says is part of the local government reform process.

However, the opposition Senate and independent legislators says they will not support the measure.

Both sets of officials will meet later this week to debate the matter.
