Suriname has offered to host the Caribbean Agricultural Health and Food Safety Agency as part of plans set out by CARICOM.

A resolution was made at last weekend’s CARICOM summit to establish an effective regional body governing food safety and sanitary measures.

Suriname President Ronald Venetiaan said the body will ensure that food which is being produced in the region or entering the region meets the highest standards of safety.

He said that while all member states are required to have a national food safety authority, the Suriname-based facility will function as the regional body.

The entire project is being financed by Suriname and is scheduled to be completed by next year.
