St. Kitts to bar dual citizens from National Assembly

Published:Wednesday | July 8, 2009 | 9:42 AM

The St. Kitts and Nevis national assembly is to debate a new bill that will bar persons with dual citizenship from holding membership.

The National Assembly Elections (Amendment) Bill requires candidates entering general elections to declare if they hold other nationalities.

The bill will also require candidates to prove that they have renounced their nationality.

Under the new legislation, a person can be charged for an offence if they provide false information relating to their citizenship.

Anyone who nominates a candidate for election knowing that the person holds dual citizenship would have committed an offence.
