Australia takes upper hand in Ashes series

Simon Katich and Ricky Ponting each scored centuries as Australia reached 249 for one at stumps to take the upper hand on today’s second day of the first Ashes test at Cardiff in England.



Responding to England\'s first innings total of 435, opener Katich was on 104 at the close while captain Ponting brought up his 100 with his last ball of the day.



Andrew Flintoff claimed the sole wicket of Philip Hughes, who was caught by wicketkeeper Matt Prior for 36.



Earlier, England resuming on 336 for seven, were bowled out for 435 after their bowlers added 99 runs.



Graeme Swann was unbeaten on 47 from 40 balls and night watchman James Anderson scored 26.



Mitchell Johnson and Nathan Hauritz were the most successful bowlers for Australia with three wickets apiece. Ben Hilfenhaus and Peter Siddle supported with two wickets each.
