UK not budging on ruling over TCI
Despite several appeals from the Turks and Caicos Island government, the British government says it will be pursuing plans to take over direct rule in the British overseas territory.
Turks and Caicos’ Premier Galmo Williams has been adamant that having the UK government running the day to day operations of the country is undemocratic.
The Gordon Brown administration decided to take over control of the country after a commission of inquiry found widespread corruption in the government of the former premier Michael Misick.
Premier Williams says it would be better to have a general election to have citizens elect their own representatives.
But the UK has rejected the suggestion, saying that it will go ahead with plans to suspend the TCI’s constitution and enact direct governance.
