A Roman Catholic priest in Trinidad who admitted to having consensual sex with the wife of a police officer has been freed of rape charges.

A jury today found Haitian-bor

n Father Enel Almeus, not guilty of committing the crime more than five years ago.

The priest had been charged with raping a policeman’s wife on March 19, 2004, at St Mary\'s College in Port of Spain, where he lives and teaches.

Several witnesses testified for the prosecution while the priest made his own defence.

It is reported that when the jury delivered its verdict the female complainant broke down in court and had to be consoled by her husband.
