TCI constitution officially suspended
British Governor of the Turks and Caicos Islands Gordon Wetherell has announced the partial suspension of the territory\'s constitution.
In a proclamation yesterday, Mr. Wetherell said the Constitution of the British oversees territory will be replaced by the Turks and Caicos Islands Constitution (Interim Amendment) Order 2009.
He says this new legislation will allow him to suspend the TCI constitution when the occasion arises.
However, Mr. Wetherell says he will delay exercising his powers until the appeal of former Premier Michael Misick is heard in the English Court of Appeal.
Mr. Misick is appealing the dismissal of his judicial review by a lower court.
The British government ousted Mr. Misick and some of his former government ministers after an investigation revealed that there was widespread corruption in the Government.
