Pay increase for Guyana public servants

The President of Guyana Bharrat Jagdeo said public sector employees are to receive salary increases by year-end.

His announcement comes as other Caribbean countries have been forced to either cut or freeze wages.

Jagdeo said Guyana has been able to deal with the global economic crisis without many social and financial problems.

Guyana has experienced a fall in global demand for export commodities, which resulted in less revenue for the country.

The government has maintained spending, especially on the social services.
