Alberto Contador won his second Tour de France after seeing out the 21st and final stage yesterday.

That stage was won in stunning style by Briton Mark Cavendish, his sixth of the 2009 Tour. He clocked four hours, two minutes and 18 seconds to win ahead of Australian Mark Renshaw and American Tyler Farrar.

Spaniard Contador held off Luxembourg’s Andy Schleck in the overall standings with American Lance Armstrong edging out Bradley Wiggins.

The 26-year-old Contador proved to be the strongest rider in the mountains and in the time trials, beating Schleck by four minutes 11 seconds with seven time champion Armstrong another one minute and 23 seconds back.

Contador compiled 85 hours, 48 minutes and 35 seconds over the 21 stages after almost 3,500 kilometre of racing in three weeks.
