Haitian search for survivors called off

The United States Coast Guard has called off the search for an estimated 67 Haitian migrants who went missing at sea on Monday.

The Coast Guard says the decision was made after searches failed to find any bodies in addition to the 15 that were found in the first two days of searches.

US Coast Guard spokeswoman Sabrina Elgammal added that the chances of finding any survivors are slim based on the length of time they were in the water.

The number of survivors has been put at 118.

On Monday, 200 Haitian migrants were crammed aboard a wooden boat which sank water after they accidentally hit a reef while trying to hide from a police vessel.

The US Coast Guard says it has interdicted 1,491 Haitian migrants so far this year.
