Antigua’s highest peak has been officially re-named Mount Obama as the CARICOM nation paid tribute to United States President Barack Obama on his 48th birthday yesterday.
Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer says the achievements of Obama, the first black president of the US, have served as an inspiration for the twin-island nation of Antigua and Barbuda.
Spencer, who announced his intention to re-name the 1,319 feet high peak that was once a refuge for escaped slaves, also used the opportunity to defend the controversial move that has not received the support of many Antiguans.
Some have suggested that the peak could have been renamed in honour of a Caribbean freedom fighter or reggae icon like Bob Marley.
