Haitians want higher wages

Haitian workers have been protesting outside the country\'s parliament, demanding an increase in the minimum wage.

They say they cannot support their families on less than $2 a day.

Lawmakers were preparing to vote on the issue yesterday when the protesters threw rocks at police and began ripping down flags of United Nations member countries near the building.

In May, parliament approved a proposal to nearly triple the minimum wage, but President Rene Preval refused to enforce it, saying the increase should exclude garment factory workers.

He said those workers should receive an increase of about $3.

Legislators plan to re-submit the proposal unchanged, to raise the minimum wage to about $5 a day.
