Labour minister to meet LIME over job cuts
The Minister of State with responsibility for Labour in Barbados, Senator Arni Walters, will meet representatives of the Barbados Workers Union (BWU) and telecommunications company, LIME tomorrow.
The meeting is in a bid to end the dispute over a decision made by LIME to send home more than 100 workers.
This follows an earlier intervention by the Chief Labour Officer that failed to end the impasse.
Last week, the General Secretary of the Barbados Workers Union, said there were plans for a national protest against LIME, the Caribbean operations of Cable and Wireless.
It says the company had refused to explore non-layoff options although other employees committed themselves to not cut jobs unless absolutely necessary.
However, LIME has accused the BWU of publicly discrediting it as there were unsuccessful attempts in May and June to get the union to have discussions.
