Shelly-Ann Fraser wins gold
Olympic champion Shelly-Ann Fraser of Jamaica turned in a brave front running display to win the women’s 100-metre gold medal on today’s third day of the 12th IAAF World Championship at the Berlin Olympic Stadium.
It was a one-two finish for Jamaica as Fraser just held on to win in a world leading and national record 10.73s ahead of compatriot Kerron Stewart, who clocked a personal best 10.75s.
The time recorded was the joint third fastest women’s clocking of all time.
American Carmelita Jeter snatched the bronze in 10.90s, ahead of defending champion Veronica Campbell-Brown of Jamaica, who clocked a season best 10.95s.
Jamaica’s other qualifier, Aleen Bailey finished at the back of the field in 11.16s.
It was Jamaica’s second sprint gold in as many days. Usain Bolt won the men’s 100 in a world record time of 9.58 seconds yesterday.
