Jamaican Usain Bolt set for 200m final
Triple Olympic medallist and world record holder Usain Bolt looks set to easily win the sprint double when he contest the 200-metre final on today’s sixth day of the World Championships in Berlin, Germany.
The race, which also includes Bolt’s Jamaican teammate Steve Millings, is scheduled to start this afternoon at 1.35 p.m.
Bolt advanced with the fastest time, winning his semi-final yesterday in 20.08.
He has already won the 100 metre gold in an awesome world record 9.58 seconds on Sunday.
Before the 200 metre final, the Jamaican pair of Beijing Olympic gold medallist Melaine Walker and Kaliese Spencer will contest the women’s 400 metre final at 1.15 p.m.
Two other Jamaicans will attempt to get into the medal round. They are Dwight Thomas and Maurice Wignall who will compete in the men’s 110 metre hurdles semi-finals.
Thomas will run the second semi-final at 11.23 a.m., while Wignall is down to contest semi-final three at 11.31 a.m. The final is set for 1.55 p.m.
Meanwhile, Jamaicans Alain Bailey and Nicholas Gordon will be in action for the first time. They will contest the first round of the men’s long jump, which starts this morning at 11.10 a.m.
Following yesterday’s fifth day, Jamaica have increased their medal tally to seven,three gold, two silver and two bronze to remain second in the medal table behind the United States with eight medals.
Veteran hurdler Brigitte Foster-Hylton gave Jamaica their third gold medal yesterday.
The 34-year-old won the women’s 100 metre hurdles with a season-best 12.51 seconds.
An overjoyed Foster-Hylton says she did not know she had won because her eyes were closed when she crossed the finish line.
Jamaica claimed two medals in the event as Delloreen Ennis-London picked up the bronze in a season-best 12.55.
