Bolt stays on track for third gold
Usain Bolt is on track for a third gold medal at the World Championships in Beijing, Germany, after the Jamaican team today qualified for the final of the men’s 4 by 100-metre relay.
With Bolt and Asafa Powell sitting out the heats, the Jamaican quartet of Lerone Clarke, Michael Frater, Steve Mullings and Dwight Thomas, finished second behind Italy, but still easily qualified in 38.60 seconds.
Bolt won the 100 and 200 metres in world record times earlier in the championships. He also won all three events at the Beijing Olympics.
Bolt will join the team in tomorrow’s final, while Powell is doubtful because of a groin injury.
Jamaica won their 10th medal at the championships following Veronica Campbell-Brown’s silver medal in the women’s 200-metres final earlier this afternoon.
Defending champion Allyson Felix of the United States won the gold medal in 22.02 seconds, well ahead of Campbell-Brown, who clocked 22.35s.
Debbie Ferguson-McKenzie of the Bahamas took bronze in 22.41 seconds.
Jamaican Anneisha McLaughlin was fifth in 22.62s and her teammate Simone Facey ended sixth in 22.80 seconds.
