Jamaica\'s athletics team heading home
Members of Jamaica’s track and field team are now preparing to return home after their all-time best World Championship showing ever, at the 12th edition of the game, which ended in Berlin, Germany yesterday.
Jamaica ended the nine-day championship by grabbing an impressive silver behind winners, the United States, in the women’s 4 by 400-metre relay final at the Berlin Olympic Stadium.
It was the 13th medal for the Jamaicans and a solid end to the championship for the Caribbean side.
The United States, with Jamaican-born athletes Sanya Richards and Debbie Dunn in their quartet, clocked a world-leading three minutes, 17.83 seconds to win gold.
Jamaica’s time for silver was a season’s best three minutes, 21.15s with their team of Rosemarie Whyte, Novlene Williams-Mills, Shereefa Lloyd and Shericka Williams.
The United States picked up other gold medals through their men’s 4 by 400-metre relay team and women’s long jump, with Brittney Reese, to move clear of Jamaica in the gold medal tally.
The United States and Jamaica both started the final day on seven gold medals and the Americans surged to 10, to cement their place as medal leaders.
Jamaica placed second with a best ever seven gold, four silver and two bronze medals to trail the Americans with 10 gold, six silver and six bronze.
