The government of Guyana has commissioned a new state-of-the-art sugar factory in Skeldon even as the administration battles with uncertainty of its future in light of the global economic trends.

The US$181,000,000 facility when fully operational will produce 1,200,000 tones of sugar for export by 2011.

The Skeldon project is expected to be a major contributor to reducing the cost of production, improving sugar quality, increasing production, reducing operational costs, as well as attract carbon credits.

President Bharrat Jagdeo says the goal of reaching the required amount of cane for the maximum operation of the facility must be pursued diligently, to meet the 1,200,000 tonne annual projection.

He says his government is committed to advance the turnaround of the sugar industry.
