Opposition organize protest in Antigua

The Antigua Labour Party (ALP) said it has successfully organised a protest against the United Progressive Party (UPP) reflecting growing opposition to the government’s management of the country’s affairs.

The party staged another in a series of public protests against the government yesterday drawing hundreds of supporters outside the offices of the Division of Consumer Affairs in the capital.

ALP Chairman Gaston Browne said the latest picket is evidence of a growing swell of opposition to the government and its policies.

The main point of contention raised at the protest was the recent hike in the price of cooking gas.

Earlier this month the government announced a marked rise in the cost of cooking gas, with a 20-pound cylinder jumping from US$7.82 to $11.94.

A 100-pound cylinder now sells for US$57. 84 compared with the previous price of $40.30.
