Japanese Prime Minister, Taro Arso, has announced his resignation as head of the party that has governed Japan for decades.
The resignation follows Mr Arso’s apparent landslide defeat in yesterday’s elections.
Exit polls suggest that Japan\'s voters gave the Opposition an enormous victory in parliamentary elections.
The polls indicate the Democratic Party of Japan may have won a three-to-one victory over the incumbent Liberal Democratic Party.
Arso congratulated the DPJ in a televised appearance as the country waited for official results.
