US Open Round Up

Marin Cilic of Croatia ousted second-ranked Andy Murray of Britain from the U.S. Open 7-5, 6-2, 6-2 today.

Cilic overcame two set points in the first set and then pounded Murray over the last two to make his first career Grand Slam quarterfinal.

Murray, who lost to Roger Federer in the final at Flushing Meadows last year, will finish 2009 without making a major final.

Cilic now plays Number six, Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina.

Del Porto defeated former Number one Juan Carlos Ferrero 6-3, 6-3 to reach his second successive Open quarterfinals.

On court now is Rafael Nadal against Gael Monfils, while Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is scheduled to play Fernando Gonzales.

Defending champion Roger Federer, Robin Soderling, Novak Djokovic and Fernando Verdasco are already through to the last eight.

On the women’s side, Kim Clijsters dismantled 18th-seeded Li Na 6-2, 6-4 to move only two wins from a U.S. Open title hardly anyone could have seen coming.

Back at the U.S. Open for the first time since 2005, when she won the tournament, Clijsters has a winning streak of 12 matches at Flushing Meadows.

She will next face Number 2 seed Serena Williams or Number 10 Flavia Pennetta.
