Grenada hands over subsidised houses

The Grenada government says it has sold 100 Venezuelan-built houses at a huge discounts to people left homeless by Hurricane Ivan in 2004.

According to Prime Minister Tillman Thomas more than 800 people had applied to buy the houses.

The government selected mostly single mothers who were renting or living with relatives.

Mr Thomas said the properties valued at US$92,000 were each sold for only 2,000 to help cover the cost of the land title transfer.

They were finished three years ago but the sale was held up because of electrical standards differences between Grenada and Venezuela.
