Former 100 metre World Champion Kim Collins, of St Kitts and Nevis, has announced he is retiring from track and field.

The 33-year-old Collins, who won gold at the 2003 World Championship in Paris, says is time to leave the big stage for younger athletes.

The history-making sprinter is coming off a moderate season in which he was eliminated in the quarterfinals of both the 100 and 200 metres at the World Championship in Berlin last month.

His season’s best times this year were 10.15 seconds for the 100 metres and 20.45 in the half-lap sprint, some way off his personal records of 9.98 and 20.20.

Collins drifted further out of the limelight in the past year with the emergence of the phenomenal Jamaican Usain Bolt, who has considerably raised the sprinting bar with his new world records of 9.58 seconds for the 100 and 19.19 for the 200.
