Financial impropriety at Belizean City Council

The Belize City Council has been rocked by a financial scandal that Prime Minister Dean Barrow calls a tragedy.

A just concluded investigation by Auditor General Edmund Zuniga found that at least close to US$139 thousand cannot be accounted for at the Council.

The special audit was ordered by the Local Government Ministry after initial reports from a specially appointed Financial Overseer said something was amiss with the finances at City Hall.

The special Financial Overseer, Patrick Tillett found that monies collected by the Belize City Council were never deposited into the Council’s bank account.
