The Caribbean is receiving close to $12 million worth of assistance from Britain and Canada, to prepare for disasters and reduce damage caused by storms.

The British Virgin Islands is one of 18 countries in the region to receive the money over the next five years.

The government in Tortola says some of the money will go towards strengthening buildings.

Last year 6 major storms caused more than $355 million in damage across the region and left over 800 dead, making it one of the busiest hurricane seasons in 60 years.
