Three Jamaican victories in China
Jamaican World Champions Melaine Walker and Brigitte Foster-Hylton registered victories at yesterday’s Shanghai Grand Prix track and field meet in China.
Walker was virtually unchallenged in the women’s 400-metre hurdles with a 54.68 clocking, ahead of Romania’s Angela Morosanu, who clocked 55.11.
Foster-Hylton powered to a photo-finish victory over American Dawn Harper in the women’s sprint hurdles. Both athletes clocked 12.56 seconds with Foster-Hylton given the edge for her sixth consecutive victory, stretching from her World Championship gold medal in Berlin last month.
Nickiesha Wilson of Jamaica was fourth in 12.92 and Lacena Golding-Clarke, also of Jamaica, ended fifth in 13.10.
There was a third Jamaican victory with Shericka Williams landing the women’s 400 in 49.83 ahead of her teammate Novlene Williams-Mills, who clocked 49.85.
Jamaica secured two other runner-up spots.
Olympic 200-metre champion Veronica Campbell-Brown clocked a season’s best 10.89 for second in the women’s 100 metres and her Jamaican teammate Sherone Simpson was fifth in 11.30. The event was won by American Carmelita Jeter, who recorded a world leading 10.64, the second fastest on the all-time women’s list.
Asafa Powell was second in the men’s 100 metres in 9.85, while his teammate Nesta Carter ran a career-best 9.91 for fourth.
American Tyson Gay won the race in 9.69 seconds, the second fastest time ever, behind Usain Bolt’s world record 9.58.
