A Haitian-American man has been charged with six counts of first-degree murder in the slayings of his wife and five children.

Thirty-three-year-old Mesac Damas, who was detained in his native Port-au-Prince on Monday, has been handed over to US authorities and is now in custody in a Florida jail.

Mr Damas admitted to killing his family as he was being transferred from a Haitian prison cell.

Earlier this week he said he had returned to Haiti to say goodbye to his family there.

Police found the bodies of his wife, and their five children, who are all under the age of 10, with the youngest being 11 months old, in the family\'s North Naples, Florida home on Saturday.
